Gwizdow on P48_S35
jgwizdowski
These maps are fascinating and I thank the site administrators for making them available. They are invaluable for genealogical research!

My grandfather Jozef Gwizdowski, born 1880 in Gwizdow, Galicia. This was the Austrian province, now in Poland.

I have found, perhaps 6 towns/villages with the name of Gwizdow, but I believe the Gwizdow found on map P48_S35 is the only area that was within the Austrian district, up to 1919.

Can anyone tell me if my assumption is correct?

Thank you greatly, in advance.

Hello,

I can see your question in http://www.polishroots.com/surnames, I can only confirm that Gwizdow in "woj. Lubelskie" (current: Lubelskie province / voivodship) – was _not_ in Galizia, but in “zabor rosyjski”. You can see the border between Austrian and Russian empires on this map:

It's a 200K Austrian map, from approx 1910, please note it is a heavy download, approx 70Mb. If you want to see it, don't try to paste the link into your browser because it will freeze, use a (free) download manager software, something like free download manager or other.
alternatively try this map, less detailed, but much lighter download :)

btw, in case you haven't noticed, 25K map of Gwizdow (black+white) is here:

some ref. to the village here (external link)

and something here, perhaps a lead.

Can I get some guidance on the projection that WIG cartographers used on the 1 to 100,000 maps?
